Copying catalogs can allow you to quickly create a unique catalog for a given customer. See the details below on how to set them up and what limitations exists around them.
What is a CLT? (Catalog with a Linked Taxonomy)
When you copy catalogs they will always exist attached to a custom taxonomy. This means that products within that catalog will only be available within those categories. This will be also true for any additional categories.
For example, if you have a product in the Essendant or Own catalog and then copy it into a CLT, that new child product inside the CLT will be associated with a different category inside of a new taxonomy.
What are Global catalogs?
Global catalogs, in contrast to CLT's, are any catalog that is created or exists where the products can be associated with any of the Global Taxonomies. See a list of Global catalogs below. Any Child catalog you create without using the Copy tool, will also be a Global catalog.
Standard Child Catalogs vs CLT?
For a particular logged in customer you can create the following
Standard Child Catalogs
Unique product data that exist only in that catalog
Create a fully custom catalog that is unique to this logged in customer.
Re-name product descriptions and details
Unique RRP/List pricing per customer
Change the primary category
CLT's (Catalog with a Linked Taxonomy)
Unique product data that exist only in that catalog
Create a fully custom catalog that is unique to this logged in customer.
Re-name product descriptions and details
Unique RRP/List pricing per customer
Change the primary category
Unique category structure
A completely unique taxonomy (Set of categories) that is exclusive to this logged in customer.
Unique category data values (Category name, descriptions, etc)
Name a category after the customer that is logged in. E.g. "Nike Safety Category"
Catalog Containers
You may only have one CLT inside any given catalog containers. You can mix one CLT with several Global catalogs.
User Settings - Global Container Access
Some users will need access to not just the restricted CLT within their catalog container but will also need access to purchase all products contained in the Global catalog container. You can enable access on a per user basis using the Global Container Access.
Copy Catalog Tool
Once enabled you will see the ability to copy a catalog on the catalog builder page.
After creating a copy
Once copied you will see a link to the new linked taxonomy.
There are two ways to copy products
Initially when you create a new CLT, as seen above.
Associate the product via the category pages
Master Products and Variants
When copying a Master product the variants will be copied as well but they will be copied without a category, unless the variants were in a primary category that was copied over to the CLT.
When you are copying from a catalog that is not the Own product catalog the product will be copied first into the own catalog then it is added to the catalog as a child of the own catalog product.
After copying a master product - it will be both a master and child product.

Catalog Containers
Only one catalog with a linked vertical is supported inside the catalog containers. This is to facilitate dynamic navigation.
Make sure to update your priorities and re-save the container to create the new index in the background.
