What is Storefront Overlay?

Storefront Overlay is the ability to show different product marketing content (e.g. Product names, descriptions, selling points, RRP, SKU's, and much more) to your customers without changing the default product record. The new product marketing content is simply overlaid on top of the product record when it is displayed to your customers via the storefront.

Why would you use Overlay?

Managed content from your back office or ERP system or from your suppliers can be of varying quality. Sometimes the product data isn't exactly how you believe a product should be marketed. There are often very good reasons why you need to tweak or add to managed product content.

Examples of why you may need to add or change managed content.

  1. My product content comes from my ERP. I can't change the content that is being pushed up from my ERP. But I need to create better product data content for my storefront customers.

  2. My supplier has great data but doesn't always provide the best product titles or descriptions. I want to add and augment product content to better target SEO keywords and phrases.

  3. I have DDS and love the content that it creates but I want to change some of the main images that they use or change the product titles.

  4. I want to add my own product selling points.

  5. I would like to inflate the RRPs of my products to show better discounts on my store.

  6. I would like to show different SKUs to my customer than I use in my ERP.

  7. I need to re-categories my managed products into different primary categories to achieve my User experience or SEO goals. I want to show these new primary categories on the storefront breadcrumbs and product details.

Child products vs Storefront Overlay

Child products allow you to make change to the description, titles, and many other fields. What's the difference between Storefront overlay and Child products?

The key difference

  • Child products can be put into different catalogs.

    • This enables you to show different customers different product sets.

  • Child and parent products are "Product records" and each have an overlay that sit on top of them.

  • Storefront overlay is what marketing content (titles, descriptions, images, etc) that a customer see for a given product.

  • Storefront overlays sit on top of Product records and don't exist on their own.

Pricing and overlay

Overlay is generally about how you describe or display your product content. However, there are times when overlay can affect your product pricing. Below is a chart to help you navigate the pricing module.

Catalog Container Rules

The container rules can only be used with the following records

  • Product records (Parent and Child)

This is because the Parent and Child products are (or can be) be in different catalogs. Product overlay is simply about the display of those items on the storefront.

To target this products via the catalog container rules, you would need to use the "Ballpoint & Rollerball Pens" category as it is the product record.
