Using Item Priority
Use item priority to control the order in which selected products appear in category or search results.
Lower values have a higher priority. Products without a priority value follow the normal result ordering.
Set an item's priority
To assign an item priority:
Go to Products.
Select Products again.
Select the product code.
Open Product Details.
Enter a value in the Priority field.
Save your changes.
Lower values have a higher priority:
1is the highest priority.2appears after1.3appears after2.Products without a priority value follow the normal result ordering.
Item priority controls the order of products relative to other products that have an item priority value. For example, a product with a priority of 1 appears before a product with a priority of 2.
Enable item priority for result pages
Assigning a priority value does not automatically change where the product appears.
The priority value is used only when Sort by is set to Item Priority for the applicable result type:
Category Results
Search Results
If another sorting option is selected, the item priority value does not control the product order.
Using item priority for category results
Item priority is recommended for Category Results.
Products within a category are generally similar, making it practical to arrange them according to your merchandising preferences. You can assign priority values to as many products as needed to create your preferred category order.
For example:
Product | Item priority | Position |
Product A | 1 | First |
Product B | 2 | Second |
Product C | 3 | Third |
Products without a priority value appear according to the normal ordering after the prioritized products.
Using item priority for search results
⚠️ Item priority can also be selected as the sorting method for Search Results, but it is not the recommended approach for search merchandising.
When item priority is enabled for search results:
Up to three products with item priority values are promoted and ordered by their priority values. The remaining products are ordered by search relevance.
The remaining products are ordered by search relevance.
Item priority is a broad merchandising control. It can move a product to the top of the results even when that product has a relatively low relevance score for the shopper's search.
For example, a product that matches a search term only through its color or description could be promoted ahead of products that more closely match what the shopper intended to find.
Example: If you prioritise a Desk that is coffee coloured and your customer searches for "Coffee", it is possible the system might return the desk over packets of coffee beans. This is because the desk was in the list of returned results for items that contain the word "Coffee".
Recommended approach for promoting search results
To promote products within search results, use Popularity Boost instead of item priority.
Popularity Boost increases the ranking of preferred products while continuing to account for search relevance. This allows you to promote products without completely overriding the quality and relevance of the search results.
👍 Recommendation: Use item priority to arrange products within categories. Use Popularity Boost to promote products within search results.
